iciHaiti - Agriculture : First official case of African Swine Plague confirmed in Haiti
The first official case of the African Swine Plague virus (ASF) has been confirmed in Haiti, more precisely in the border town of Anse-a-Pitres by the specialized American laboratory "Plum Island Animal Disease Center".

The Ministry of Agriculture says it is taking all measures to contain the risk of an epidemic of this deadly hemorrhagic disease for animals and very contagious, for which there is still no vaccine. Note that this Swine Plague is harmless to humans.

The Ministry calls on breeders to respect the vigilance and prevention instructions recommended by the health protection services.

Among our Dominican neighbors, Limber Cruz, the Minister of Agriculture declared in a note that ASF was under control and that the country is on the right track to eradicate this disease from the Dominican territory. The note specifies that to date, the South, Center-North and East regions are free from ASF.

Cruz, who also chairs the official Commission for the Eradication of ASF, indicated that this achievement has been achieved through the cooperation of different national and international sectors, as well as the use of advanced technologies allowing the analysis and the extraction of samples without contamination, with results in less than 48 hours, allowing rapid intervention in infected foci.

He said the results of laboratory tests carried out last week on 415 suspected samples, indicate that in 87% the disease was not detected.

He adds that so far, more than 2,000 pig farmers in 22 provinces have recovered their investment, after receiving 395 million pesos in compensation for the slaughter of 65,760 pigs as part of the efforts to eradicate the virus of the PPA.
