iciHaiti - Social : Distribution of thousands of giraumon soup dishes

As part of the multi-sectoral emergency program for the appeasement and reintegration of vulnerable groups through the "Mobile canteen" component, the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES) distributed on January 1st, 2023, more than 9,000 dishes of giraumon soup, traditional Haitian soup inscribed on the list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35500-haiti-culture-the-soup-joumou-on-the-list-of-intangible-cultural-heritage-of-humanity.html

This distribution was carried out mainly at the Champs de Mars, the place of the Heroes of the independence of Haiti, at three different points.

The FAES intends to perpetuate the ancestral tradition of sharing, through this distribution of pumpkin soup which symbolizes freedom and the abolition of slavery.

Find out more about giraumon soup :

Giraumon soup, historians say, was reserved for whites, colonial slave masters. Its consummation on January 1st, 1804 had marked the revenge of the Newly Liberated against the oppressors.

Dessalines' wife, Marie Claire Heureuse Félicité Bonheur, encouraged the preparation and distribution of this soup every January 1st. The essence of distributing this soup is sharing. Sharing with family, friends and neighbours. It is more than a duty for the FAES to work to maintain this ancestral tradition.
