iciHaiti - Agriculture : The «Lam veritab» a very promising agricultural sector

Friday, July 7 at the Hotel Karibe, the International Labor Organization (ILO) under the High Patronage of the Ministry of Social Affairs, associated with the Ministries of Trade, Agriculture, Environment and Public Health with the different actors in the breadfruit supply chain (commonly known as "Lam veritab") organized an event to promote breadfruit, an agricultural sector with great promise in terms of employment.

This event is part of the programs (UNDP/ILO/FAO - UNCTAD/ILO) financed by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Fund dedicated to Small Island Developing States.

This initiative aims, among other things, to create sustainable jobs and improve agricultural productivity to generate increased income and lead to significant socio-economic results.

The economic potential of the sector was presented, as well as various traditional preparations of "Lam veritab" and new tasty and creative preparations, offered for tasting.

Learn more about breadfruit:

Breadfruit is an edible fruit that grows on the breadfruit tree, artocarpus altilis, native to Oceania and widely distributed in the tropics. It can measure up to 20 m high and bear fruit after 6 years.

Breadfruit is a major crop in Haiti that can play an important role in the country's food security and economy. It is a starchy fruit devoid of gluten, rich in carbohydrates, fiber and essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals). Breadfruit is a potentially important resource for Haitian farmers because the plantations require little maintenance and can provide a high yield of fruit, even in poor soil conditions.
