iciHaiti - Drama of Peñuela : The Haitian authorities will provide assistance to the families of the 13 drowned victims
The Haitian authorities ensure that they are providing assistance to the relatives of the 13 drowned victims of illegal migrant smugglers on Sunday, August 6, when the vehicle transporting them fell into an irrigation canal in the Peñuela community of the municipality of Esperanza in the province of Valverde https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-40207-icihaiti-dr-at-least-13-haitians-drowned-in-an-irrigation-canal.html

The response comes following complaints made by relatives of victims due to the lack of support from the Haitian authorities.

So far it has been reported that at least 7 people have been identified and the bodies removed by their relatives. However, the other 6 could be buried in a mass grave due to problems identifying and claiming them.

A source linked to the Haitian consulate said "The authorities already have a report on the case. The Dajabón consulate has all the reports of the relatives, also to follow up and provide the necessary assistance."

Dominican authorities reported that some relatives chose to bury their loved ones at Ingenio Cemetery because they did not have the financial resources to repatriate them to Haiti.

It should be noted that in recent days, several people were arrested transporting foreigners in an irregular migratory situation, mainly Haitian nationals, in vehicles and motorcycles, which were seized by members of the Dominican Army patrols.
