After the damage suffered by the telecommunications sector following the last earthquake in Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34479-haiti-flash-magnitude-72-earthquake-in-the-nippes-updated-10am.html, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) with the approval of the National Telecommunications Council (CONATEL) has commissioned an assessment of the resilience of telecommunications networks and infrastructures in Haiti.

In order to share the results of this technical study with stakeholders in the sector, a restitution workshop was recently organized by the two institutions.

In his opening remarks of this workshop the engineer Rosemond PRADEL, Minister of Public Works, Transport and Communications (MTPTC), the engineer said he hoped that the Telecommunications sector will make good use of this evaluation.

Telecommunications expert, engineer Gregory Domond, technical adviser at CONATEL, to whom this technical study was entrusted, presented the results to stakeholders in the sector in Haiti and several ITU representatives participating by videoconference.

In his speech, Engineer Domond presented: the assessment of damage to telecommunications networks and infrastructure; evaluation of the network restoration plan; the current level of resilience and the current state of emergency telecommunications. All evaluations were accompanied by relevant recommendations.

Now, the ITU will work on the drafting of the edition of the final document which will be given free of charge to the stakeholders of the telecommunications sector and also to the Haitian State which will have to define the policy of resilience. and the post-disaster recovery plan for telecommunications networks in the country.

For the establishment of a real emergency telecommunications policy, Engineer Joses Jean Baptiste, General Director of CONATEL, announced the formation of a Monitoring Committee which will work in concert with the Ministry of Public Works while taking into account the recommendations of the ITU telecommunications network and infrastructure resilience assessment document.

Various actors took part in this workshop by videoconference, such as ITU representatives based in different parts of the world, namely in Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. At the national level, the regulatory body CONATEL, the supervisory Ministry TPTC, telecommunications operators, technical managers of elements of the Internet ecosystem, the army of Haiti and civil society entities interested in the issue telecommunications.
