Haiti - Politic : Insecurity prevents Colombian President from visiting Haiti

Friday, August 16, 2024, taking advantage of his presence in the Dominican Republic for the inauguration ceremony of the re-elected President Luis Abinader, the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, known for his commitment to international solidarity, expressed his intention to travel to Haiti to learn first-hand about the situation and explore possible avenues of collaboration.

However, the Haitian government, aware of the security challenges facing the country, recommended postponing the visit until conditions are more favorable.

The security crisis in Haiti, marked by high levels of violence and disorder, is a source of concern both regionally and internationally. The Haitian authorities indicated that they could not guarantee the security necessary for a presidential visit, which led Petro to postpone his plan.

The Haitian government thanked the Colombian President for his concern and expressed the hope that, in the near future, when the situation improves, the visit can take place.
