iciHaiti - Social : National Funeral of Mgr. Joseph Willy Romélus
On Thursday, August 21, 2025, Presidential Transition Advisors Louis Gérald Gilles and Emmanuel Vertilaire, accompanied by Patrick Pélissier, Minister of Justice, participated in the state funeral of Mgr Joseph Willy Romélus.

The ceremony took place at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Jérémie, presided over by His Eminence Cardinal Chibly Langlois.

In his remarks, Advisor Louis Gérald Gilles expressed deep emotion at the passing of this man of faith whose love for God was matched by his unwavering commitment to Haiti. He recalled Bishop Romélus' courageous role in the fight for democracy, tirelessly denouncing the injustices and political instability that marked Haitian society. The prelate also distinguished himself through his efforts in Europe and America to seek aid and solidarity to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants of Grand-Anse. On behalf of the Haitian people, and particularly the people of Jérémie, Councilor Louis Gérald Gilles expressed his deep gratitude to this man who gave so much to his country.

In his homily, Bishop Joseph Gontran Décoste highlighted the exceptional qualities of the deceased: a bishop and a patriot of rare moral, intellectual, political, and spiritual stature. He recalled that Bishop Romélus was an apostle of non-violence, justice, and peace.

For her part, Ms. Sylmatha Pierre, Acting Mayor of Jérémie, paid tribute to the memory of a free and committed man, whose priesthood was a testimony of love for God, his people, and his country.

Let's recall that Bishop Romélus Joseph Willy Romélus, Bishop Emeritus, died on August 12, 2025, in Arniquet, in the Sud department, at the age of 94.
