According to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), renewed violence in the Artibonite department displaced approximately 1,500 people last week.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), nearly 900 people were displaced in the communes of Saint-Marc and Verrettes and are currently being hosted by local families.

Four days of violence in the Artibonite department, between September 15 and 18, led to the displacement of approximately 600 more people in the commune of Saint-Michel-de-l’Attalaye. Like many families in Haiti, they had already been forced to flee their homes two months prior and had only recently returned.

Since the beginning of the year, violence has forced more than 100,000 people to leave their homes. In total, nearly 1.5 million people, or 12% of Haiti’s total population, are internally displaced.

The UN and its humanitarian partners continue to support displaced people by providing shelter, essential household items, and other life-saving assistance, despite an extremely challenging operational environment.

OCHA continues its close collaboration with humanitarian partners and national authorities to coordinate the response and ensure that displaced people can safely access essential services and assistance.

The $880 million Humanitarian Response Plan for Haiti is currently funded to the tune of $416 million (47%), with the UN and its humanitarian partners needing additional funding to maintain life-saving assistance to displaced families and other vulnerable communities.
