Following the recent torrential rains that struck the Artibonite department—causing significant water surges and massive alluvial deposits—the Ministry of Public Works remains fully mobilized on the ground to restore traffic flow and ensure safety in the area.

The severe weather particularly affected several vulnerable areas, notably Biénac and the Gattereau and Ka Soleil neighborhoods, where runoff from the surrounding hills almost completely blocked existing drainage systems.

Given the heightened risk of flooding in residential areas, top priority was given to clearing drainage infrastructure. Acting on instructions from Minister Pierre Louis, the Artibonite Departmental Directorate of Public Works launched an emergency operation at the Biénac canal to clear a 300-meter stretch and improve water flow.

Alongside these cleanup operations, the Ministry’s technical teams were deployed to Rue Christophe, which had been severely damaged by the force of the floodwaters and the accumulation of debris. To make the road passable as quickly as possible, work was undertaken to clear the affected area, remove damaged surface layers, and backfill the roadway.

In accordance with road engineering standards, the treated section is currently under technical monitoring; Ministry engineers are assessing the stability of the backfill under traffic loads and natural drainage conditions before proceeding with further work.
