Following the temporary closure of the Bahamas Embassy in Port-au-Prince, as well as the recall of all embassy staff and its consular mission due to the violent socio-political tensions in Haiti, the Government of the Bahamas decided in a statement released Sunday, to suspend temporarily and with immediate effect, all the deportations of Haitian citizens in irregular migratory situation on the Bahamian territory

Meanwhile, the executive said that in addition to the security forces, the Bahamas border was on high alert for the risk of increased arrivals of Haitian illegal immigrants to the Bahamas, mainly by sea, due to the political instability in Haiti.

The Immigration Department reminded that despite the situation in Haiti, its immigration policy was still the same and there is no change or exception in this regard. All illegal immigrants will continue to be arrested and detained in the event of an irregular migration situation in the Bahamas.
