iciHaiti - Medicine : A Haitian recipient of the title of Commander of the Order of Montreal
Two professors from the Faculty of Medicine of the Université de Montréal (UdM) were named Commanders of the Order of Montreal, the highest title of the Order. Dr. Jean-Claude Fouron, a pioneer of fetal cardiology of Haitian origin, and Dr. Trang Hoang, leader in the fight against leukemia.

Recipients will receive their insignia during a ceremony at City Hall on May 17, the day of the founding of Montreal 375 years ago

A pediatric cardiologist at the Sainte Justine University Hospital Center (CHU) in Montreal for nearly 50 years, Jean-Claude Fouron, a native of Haiti, was a pioneer of fetal cardiology who arrived in Quebec in 1960. In 1989, he founded the first unit of fetal cardiology in Canada. Specialist known for his pioneering work on the functioning and disorders of the fetal and neonatal cardiocirculatory system, especially those due to malformations, arrhythmia and placental circulatory insufficiency. Dr. Fouron's achievements have had a decisive influence on the advancement of his discipline, the reduction of maternal-infant mortality and the improvement of specialized ultrasound services.

Professor Emeritus of UdM's Department of Pediatrics and a recognized researcher, Jean-Claude Fouron has always had at heart a clear and rhythmic teaching through exchanges, a rigorous research and a communication finesse and humor. His recognition as a international leader in its field has made the name of Montreal and its eponymous university shine.

Dr. Fouron is an Officer of the National Order of Quebec, a Member of the Order of Canada and a recipient of the Charles Biddle Award and the Grand Prix of the Collège des médecins du Québec.
