iciHaiti - Petit-Goâve : Reforestation, the Mormons alongside the DINEPA
On May 29, the Mormons of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated to the National Directorate of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DINEPA) of Petit-Goâve 6,825 trees of different species including avocado, coconut, cherry, mango, lemon, corossol, "benzolive" (Moringa), cedar, orange, breadfruit, mahogany etc....

These plants were planted on the sites of DINEPA located in Béatrice (11th communal section of Petit-Goâve) with the help of more than 500 students from several schools in the city (Petit-Goâve College, Collège Thomas Madiou, Jean Jacques Legrand College, Harry Breakman College, Saint-Ignace College, Notre Dame College), DINEPA employees, Mormon Church faithful and members of civil society.

Note that fruit trees have also been distributed to farmers in the area.

"This donation from the Mormon Church aims to address the city's water shortage and combat erosion. Because my faithful and myself are victims of lack of water. That's why, as citizens, we offer trees and we participate in this reforestation activity," said Hyacinthe Octa, head of this religious congregation.

"Today we are just beginning. We thank the Mormons and we will continue this reforestation campaign. Residents welcomed the initiative of today. A monitoring committee has already been set up to ensure the protection of planted trees," said Louiné Pierre-Louis. Director of the local office of DINEPA.

Deputy Mayor Delor Desgranges took part in planting of these trees.
