The Japanese tennis star of Haitian origin Naomi Osaka, after withdrawing from the Cincinnati tournament in solidarity against the police shootings on the African-American Jacob Blake https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-31656-haiti-racism-usa-haitian-japanese-naomi-osaka-withdraws-from-the-cincinnati-tournament-to-protest.html , as the organizers of the tournament, the "Women's Tennis Association" (WTA ) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) had supported Naomi's position by suspending competition for a day, Naomi felt it was time to return to the court to play her semi-final which she won against Belgian Élise Mertens in straight sets (6-2, 7-6) qualifying for the final.
Unfortunately on Saturday August 29, a few hours before the final and two days before her first US Open match, Naomi withdrew due to injury, saying in a statement "I'm so sorry to have to retire because of injury [...] did a strain on the left thigh on Friday in the tie break of the 2nd set and I did not recover as I hoped."
