iciHaiti - Bahamas : 88 Haitian boat-people intercepted near «Great Inagua»
The Coast Guard and the Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF) intercepted 88 Haitians aboard an overloaded sailboat near Great Inagua, Bahamas.

MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from the Clearwater Coast Guard's Operation Bahamas, Turks and Caicos located the overloaded sailing craft with 88 people on board, approximately 23 miles west of Great Inagua, in the Bahamas archipelago.

On site, the crew of the Jayhawk diverted two RBDF ships to the migrant boat which transshipped the 88 passengers of Haitian origin in an irregular migratory situation aboard the RBDF HMBS Leon Livingston Smith and the RBDF HMBS Nassau.

"Coast Guard crews continue to have a presence patrolling the waters around Haiti, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Bahamas, to ensure safety of life at sea [...] Navigating the Florida straits, Windward and Mona Passages in overloaded and less than seaworthy passages is extremely dangerous and can result in loss of life. The Coast Guard and our partner agencies will continue to stop these voyages. You will be interdicted and should expect to be returned and repatriated to your country of origin," said Capt. Benjamin Golightly, Chief of Response for the Coast Guard's Seventh District.

In 2021, the Coast Guard rescued 1,527 Haitian migrants; 418 in 2020; 932 in 2019; 609 in 2018 and 419 Haitian migrants in 2017.
