iciHaiti - Fuel : Demonstration against fuel shortage

On Wednesday barricades of burning tires were erected on several axes of downtown Port-au-Prince blocking traffic...

Highly motivated demonstrators : motorcycle taxi drivers, angry residents and political activists took to the streets to protest against fuel shortages, insecurity and the Government's inaction...

Sporadic gunshots of unknown origin were reported during the day.

Most service stations are closed, operations at the Varreux oil terminal, the country's largest, have been paralyzed since July 8 due to armed clashes between nearby gangs.

On the other hand, the black market is well supplied but prices reach peaks of up to 1,500 Gourdes per gallon in the capital and up to 2,000 Gourdes per gallon in Jérémie (Dept. Grand'Anse).

Around 2:30, taking advantage of a relative lull in the fighting between the gangs, one of the two ships blocked in the harbor of Port-au-Prince for security reasons, carrying 70,0000 barrels of gasoline was able to unload its precious cargo at the Varreux terminal. Hoping that this Thursday the tank trucks can be loaded and leave the terminal safely...
