iciHaiti - Cap-Haitien : Shipwreck off the coast of Labadee : 16 survivors, 1 dead
On Saturday, June 28, 2025, a dinghy carrying 17 third- and fourth-year computer science students from Anténor Firmin University (UNAF) capsized off the coast of Labadee after a recreational day in Kadras, according to Patrick Almonor, Deputy Mayor of Cap-Haitien.

Fortunately, other canoes were on hand to rescue them. Seven of them were taken to hospital, but sadly, one died.

According to initial reports, the boat sank approximately 25 minutes after departure. The rapid response of local residents, including security guards and three jet ski operators, saved 16 of the 17 passengers.

Johnson Charitable, a survivor, explained that the canoe was carrying sound equipment and 17 passengers from Kadras. It was in an area called Baron that gusts of wind and strong waves capsized the overloaded boat.

There was only one casualty, Raphine Étienne, a student who died while being transported to Justinien University Hospital (HUJ) in Cap-Haitien. The Board of Anténor Firmin University (UNAF) confirmed the student's death during an unauthorized university sea trip.

Dr. Calil Turène, Medical Director of HUJ, stated that the hospital had admitted eight students, seven of whom had already been able to return home after treatment. He also denied false reports suggesting that 12 students had died in the sinking.
