iciHaiti - Textile : More than 26,000 jobs lost in 2 years

Monday January 29, 2024, Georges Sassine President of the Association of Industries of Haiti (ADIH) revealed on a radio in the capital that the textile sector had lost more than 26,000 jobs over the last two years.

He recalls that in 24 months, jobs in this sector have fallen from 62,000 to less than 36,000, recalling that 2 foreign companies have already permanently closed their doors and 3 others are trying to survive with a workforce reduced by 90%.

The insecurity experienced by the country and the impossibility of moving freely on the roads have serious consequences on the economy, recalling that 90% of Haiti's exports come from the textile sector.

He believes that if insecurity persists, Haitian businesses are on the verge of disappearing.

Note that the CODEVI Free Zone (18,000 jobs) which had closed its doors temporarily on January 25 to ensure the safety of its employees and which was to reopen Monday January 29, kept its doors closed as demonstrators prevented employees from going to their workplace...
