iciHaiti - Reforestation : 175 kg of Mahogany seeds transferred to the Ouanaminthe Germplasm Center
The North-East Departmental Directorate of the Ministry of the Environment received 175 kg of Mahogany seeds (Swietenia Mahogany), donated by the Directorate of Forests and Renewable Energy (DFER). These seeds, collected last month in the gardens of the Collège Saint-Louis de Gonzague (Delmas 31) https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-44245-icihaiti-environment-2025-campaign-for-collecting-native-and-endemic-seeds.html , were transferred to the Ouanaminthe Forest and Fruit Germplasm Center (*) hhttps://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-36046-icihaiti-ounaminthe-the-center-for-germplasm-and-plant-propagation-welcomes-academics.html where they will follow a rigorous preparation process before being used in the Ministry of the Environment's reforestation programs.

According to Eder Audate, Director of the DFER, seed treatment is a crucial step to ensure maximum germination potential and provide nurserymen with viable seeds adapted to local climatic conditions. "We give maximum priority to native seeds, because they promote better resistance to climatic stresses and pests."

This project is part of the vision of the Minister of the Environment, Moïse Fils Jean Pierre, to restore degraded forest ecosystems and strengthen vegetation cover in Haiti. By next June, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the Ministry of the Environment, these Mahogany seedlings will be ready and will actively contribute to the Ministry's national reforestation program.
