iciHaiïti - Cap-Haitien : Reception of gabion weirs in the Ti Vautain ravine

On Thursday, October 2nd, 2025, in the Bande du Nord section, Ti Fent locality, was held the official acceptance ceremony for the rehabilitation of the gabion weirs in the Ti Vautaine ravine. This project, funded by the French Embassy and implemented by SOGETI under the supervision of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Northern Departmental Agricultural Directorate (DDA/N), directly benefits the DDA/N, the Municipal Agricultural Bureau (BAC) of Cap-Haïtien, and the entire local community.

The work completed resulted in the construction of 126 m³ of gabion weirs, spread across three weirs (58 m³ for the first weir, 42 m³ for the second, and 26 m³ for the third). To strengthen ecological protection and prevent erosion, reforestation was carried out, including 500 vetiver plants, 40 bamboo plants, 12 mango trees, 10 avocado trees, and 6 soursop trees.

The social impact of the project is significant. It created jobs for 24 skilled workers, 73 unskilled workers, and 3 interns, with a distribution of 33% women and 67% men. In addition, a seven-member management committee was established to ensure the monitoring and sustainable maintenance of the structures.

The rehabilitation of the gabion weirs in the Ti Vautaine ravine represents a major step forward for soil protection and agricultural resilience in the Ti Fent area. Thanks to the combination of international funding, SOGETI's technical expertise, and the active involvement of the community, this project illustrates a sustainable model that effectively integrates infrastructure, the environment, and social development.
