iciHaiti - FLASH : More than 2 billion gourdes losses in the agricultural sector

The agronomist Arnoux Severin, Director of Vegetal production at the Ministry of Agriculture, following the report presented by experts from the Ministry after field investigation concerning the ravaging plantations of millet by insects in several communes of the country, including Boucan-Carré, Thomonde, Hinche, Maissade, Thomassique, Petit-Goâve, Aquin, estimated the losses in this sector to 2 billion gourdes. He says that climate change is for much in the devastation of fields, resulting in favorable situations for the development of insects responsible for a loss of 97% in the production of long cycle millet.

Recall that the production of millet in the Central Plateau (31,000 hectares) is the 3rd cereal production in Haiti after rice and maize.

However, all varieties of millet are not affected to the same extent, also the Ministry intends to also increase non-photoperiodic varieties more resistant to this type of epidemic and provisions will be taken to the next planting in May and June.
