Late Wednesday afternoon, during a press briefing at the National Emergency Operations Centre (COUN), Mrs. Alta Jean-Baptiste, the Director of the Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) declared " [...] we are in a stage where we continue to collect information [...] the information begins to arrive on the department of Grand'Anse [after 18 hours without communication] later we will give more information on the situation of the Grand'Anse department. We can tell you that there are communes like Dame Marie where there are a lot of material damage and also loss of life."

According to the latest information provided Wednesday evening "The toll rose following the Matthew passage: 23 dead, 3 missing, 27 injured, 21.202 people in 152 shelters. These figures do not include the department of Grand-Anse where evaluations are taking place..."
