As part of a medical assistance program for detainees, the Hospital of Léogâne "Help Hospital And School" took stock of its interventions in prisons in Haiti from May 2016 to May 2017.
Eloi Berius, the institution's President and CEO, revealed that during this period, 3,828 detainees were taken into custody in the prisons of Hinche, Arcahaie, Pétion-vill and the national penitentiary, pointing out that the most recurring pathologies in the Penitentiary centers in Haiti are tuberculosis, vaginal infection and syphilis. It also deplores the significant increase in cases of contagious diseases in prisons due to poor sanitary conditions in prison facilities and hygiene conditions.
The second phase of this program will start on 5 June in the towns of Les Cayes and Petit-Goâve.
