Saturday, four undocumented Haitians died after jumping into an irrigation canal in Santa Cruz (Montecristi) while trying to escape a police patrol that was chasing the motorcycle taxi that carried them. A Haitian witness of the drama said he saw from afar around 4:00 in the afternoon his compatriots get off the bike and jump into the canal.

On Sunday, three bodies were found and authorities are continuing investigations assuming that there is another drowned Haitian whose body has not yet been found. The medical examiner confirmed the death by drowning.

The driver of the motorcycle fled, but Johanna Bejarán, Montecristi's prosecutor said Monday that he had been identified and located him, announcing his imminent arrest.

The victims lived in the community of Ounaminthe, Haiti and were transported on a motorcycle by a migrant trafficker.
