iciHaiti - Economy : The Haitian Group GB could build a cement plant in Jamaica
The Haiti-based Gilbert Bigio Group (GB Group) is planning to build a cement plant in Jamaica, a market it already serves thanks to imports from its Domicem subsidiary, a Dominican cement plant. GB Group also operates a network of service stations in the Caribbean country through its "GB Energy" division.

"We believe that Jamaica is in a very good time right now," said Mauricio Pulido, Jamaica Country Head at GB Energy "We believe that to grow the country, we need to have more affordable materials to build."

According to Pulido, the plant's plans are still at the "exploratory" stage and depend on the results of feasibility studies and government approvals. The initial investment in the project would be approximately $15 million.

It should be noted that Caribbean Cement, a subsidiary of CEMEX-controller, TCL Group, is currently the only cement producer in Jamaica to operate an integrated cement plant in Rockfort. For its part, GB Group began importing cement from its subsidiary Domicem, after the opening of the market by the Jamaican government 10 years ago.
