iciHaiti - Economy : Dominican Republic seeks trade deal with Haiti 07/12/2018 15:10:15
Asked this week by students at the Santo Domingo Technological Institute, Dominican Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas Maldonado said that Haiti was a strategic partner and that the Dominican Government was seeking to formalize a trade agreement with this neighboring country, in order to eliminate the restrictions and smuggling that have affected trade relations between the two countries for years. However, he regretted that it was still not possible to reach an agreement which, in his opinion, would benefit not only the Dominican Republic, but also Haiti, which would receive significant customs duties and taxes on the volume exchanges highlighting that this agreement would generate a viable trade flow for both countries. Recall that Haiti with 799 million of Dominican products imported, is the third largest trading partner of the Dominican Republic behind Canada (883 million) and ahead of India in strong growth (643 million), the USA remaining the 1st partner of the neighboring country with 4.78 billion.
