According to Paul Yves Fausner, Head of Department of Higher Education and Research (DESR), an entity of the Ministry of National Education, only 138 public and private higher education institutions are recognized in Haiti by the competent authorities.

Any entity offering training at licence level, at least undergraduate (1st cycle) or postgraduate level (2nd or 3rd cycle) is considered a higher education institution by the DESR.

The updated list includes 138 Public Higher Education Institutions and Recognized Private Higher Education Institutions, mainly: Universities, Institutes, Higher Schools and Specialized Schools or Centers of Higher Studies. By including faculties the total number amount to 159.
