The incident occurred near the military detachment located in La Vigía, when Army Sergeant Joselito de La Rosa Polanco and Corporal Dauri Hernández, both assigned to CESFRONT who were patrolling the area, intercepted a individual of Haitian origin illegally crossing the border on a motorcycle at an informal crossing.

According to a CESFRONT note, the military ordered the Haitian to get off his motorcycle, but instead of calmly obeying, he allegedly violently attacked and struck Corporal Hernández by surprise.
