iciHaiti - Health : 3 years without cholera, Haiti awaits its WHO elimination certificate
On February 4, 2022, it was exactly 3 years since the last case of cholera was recorded in Haiti, a ceremony to highlight this event took place in the presence of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, Minister of Health Dr. Alex Larsen, the Secretary of State for Population and Human Development Laurent Beaugé, the Director General of the Ministry of Health Dr Laure Adrien, the Director General of the National Directorate of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DINEPA) Guito Edouard, representatives of the World Bank, the United Nations system, the CDC, former Ministers and Directors General of the Ministry of Health and technical and financial partners of the Ministry.

According to the definition of the "Global Task Force on Cholera Control" : Any country which reports no confirmed case with evidence of local transmission for at least three consecutive years and which has an effective epidemiological surveillance system capable of detecting all confirmed cases, will receive a certificate of elimination. So Haiti will receive its cholera elimination certificate.

Minister Larsen renewed his sympathies to all the families who were victims of the Cholera epidemic and greatly thanked all those who contributed, in one way or another, to eliminating Cholera in Haiti.

In his address, acting Prime Minister Ariel Henry said, “"I would like to congratulate everyone involved. especially the international community, who have done a colossal job, allowing us to achieve 3 years without cholera.

[...] I have a special thought for the many victims of this imported tragedy. To all those who, directly or indirectly, have been affected, I renew the sympathy of my Government.

This victory we have won over cholera must be lasting. We hope that the international community will continue to support us in order to enable us to create sanitary conditions to avoid any reappearance and any spread of cholera in our country."
