iciHaiti - Obituaries: Death of Professor Gérard Borne

The Ministry of Culture and Communication (MCC) and the Ministry of National Education and Professional Training (MENFP) salute the memory of Professor Gérard Borne, who died on April 6, in France (his native country).

Gérard Borne has long directed the Alcibiade Pomeyrac Center in Jacmel and contributed to the training of thousands of Haitians. Professor Borne took to heart, during his long stay at Alcibiade Pomeyrac, in particular to make known to schoolchildren, the contemporary Haitian writers whom he invited for conferences and signatures.

"Gérard Borne was a great lover of literature. He allowed his students to meet most of the major writers of our literature. He often encouraged me in my writing, in a country where it is not easy to find good incentives. I dedicated my novel Le sang et la mer to him [...]" wrote the Haitian novelist Gary Victor, on his Facebook page adding "Gérard Borne wanted his ashes to be scattered at sea in Jacmel, at Cap Lamandou. Jacmel has lost a quality man. Me, an invaluable friend. May the sea and Agwe always accompany you my dear Gerard !"

Gérard Borne was also Advisor to the Minister of National Education Joseph C. Bernard (1979-1982).

The MCC and the MENFP offer their condolences to the family of Gérard Borne, his colleagues, those who rubbed shoulders with and admired him for his immense dedication to Haiti and Jacmel.
