iciHaiti - US Guard Coast : The crew of the Cambell saved 528 Haitians in 80 days
The crew aboard the US Guard Coast cutter Cambell returned to Newport after an 80-day patrol as part of Operation Southeast Watch.

During the patrol, the 100-member crew patrolled Windward Pass and the Straits of South Florida, to intercept illegal migrant vessels departing from Haiti and Cuba. According to the Coast Guard, 528 Haitians and 21 Cubans were rescued in total during this patrol.

A wooden sailboat with 67 Haitians, including children as young as five months on board, was intercepted on April 10. The group had left Haiti nearly a week earlier and lacked food, water, infant formula and other essential supplies.

The Coast Guard provided medical attention before they were taken to Bahamian authorities on April 15, 2022.

Five other ships were intercepted with migrants from Haiti and Cuba in April and June. During one of the rescues, 212 Haitians aboard a 50-foot motor vessel coming from the southern Turks and Caicos Islands were intercepted.
