Haiti - Dominican Republic : The border «is completely calm»

On Wednesday, November 4th, 2026, the Dominican Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández, stated that trade, the authorized transit of individuals, and other routine operations are "continuing as normal". He confirmed this following a tour of the main border crossings with the neighboring country (Dajabón, Elías Piña, Jimaní, and Pedernales) during which he was accompanied by the Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza.

This tour takes place against a backdrop of intensifying operations against armed gangs in Port-au-Prince. These efforts include the search for four Salvadoran military technicians—members of the Gang Su pression Force (GSF) who have been missing since October 18, when they were targeted in an ambush.

"The border is completely calm; the nearest gangs are located toward Mirebalais (in the Centre Department) and Croix-des-Bouquets (on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince). They are not as close to the border as some have suggested," the Minister of Defense told the media.

It should be recalled that, in late October, the Dominican government deployed two battalions, along with heavy equipment and artillery, to bolster security in light of the tense situation prevailing in Haiti. This reinforcement comes in addition to the approximately 11,000 military personnel already deployed along the border with Haiti.

For his part, the Minister of the Presidency—commenting on the arrival in Haiti of more than 2,000 Salvadoran soldiers tasked with combating gangs—stated that "the Government of the Dominican Republic must exercise great caution in how it engages with this conflict [...] Our two countries share a border and a small island; any stance or action that does not adhere to established procedures including those at the international level-risks prolonging the conflict, which would not serve the interests of the relationship between the two nations." Nevertheless, Paliza indicated that the Dominican government is providing El Salvador with logistical support, information, intelligence, the transit of military equipment, and medical assistance "should the need arise".

Furthermore, he asserted that, given the situation in Haiti, "if additional measures were to become necessary, such as closing the border", the Dominican government would act according to the circumstances.
