After a year 2022 that posed enormous challenges for human rights, the year 2023 will present a similar outlook, "with wars and conflicts continuing to have an immense impact on civilians," Volker predicted. Türke United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

"[...] The headlines were in Ukraine, but let's not forget other crises such as those in Burma, Syria, Haiti, Yemen, Somalia or the Democratic Republic of Congo [...]" Türk said of the challenges his office will face in 2023.

The Austrian diplomat was especially worried about the evolution of the food crisis, fearing that it would spread especially in the most "vulnerable" countries, with which there is a risk of "social discontent and disproportionate responses from the authorities..."
