iciHaiti - Côte des Arcadins : The future of tourism in the hands of gangs

The Côte des Arcadins region is one of the victims of increased insecurity and violence : the Wahoo Bay beach hotel and the Ouanga Bay hotel were attacked, ransacked and looted hhttps://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-39081-haiti-flash-the-wahoo-bay-beach-hotel-on-the-cote-des-arcadins-attacked-ransacked-and-looted.html and https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-39389-haiti-news-zapping.html are the proof if necessary.

According to recent reports, approximately $100 million in tourism investment on the Arcadins coast is thus delivered to the mercy of armed gangs operating in the region. These gangs collect ransoms from local businesses, residents and the few rare tourists, creating a climate of fear in the region.

This climate of fear and armed violence had a major negative impact on tourism investment in the region, which had benefited from the natural beauty of the coast and the presence of luxury resorts and now drives tourists and businessmen to stay away from the area which significantly affects the local economy.

Additionally, hotel and restaurant workers have seen their income decline due to lower visitor numbers.

Local authorities have promised to take measures to combat insecurity in the region and protect tourist investments. However, these announcements did not restore the confidence of tourists and businessmen. The future of tourism in the Côte des Arcadins depends on the PNH or armed gangs who enjoy total impunity.
