iciHaiti - Port-à-Piment : MSF has built a medical structure dedicated to pregnant women and newborns

As part of the two-year commemoration of the earthquake of August 14, 2021 which mourned the South of Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34479-haiti-flash-magnitude-72-earthquake-in-the-nippes-updated-10am.html , Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) remembers the countless lives lost and the communities affected by this tragedy https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34681-haiti-earthquake-latest-assessment-of-civil-protection.html . From the first moments, MSF positioned itself alongside the survivors to provide emergency medical care

In collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health, MSF has built in Port-à-Piment a complete medical structure entirely dedicated to the care of pregnant women and newborns in the region. This center also welcomes "normal" births from Port-à-Piment but also those from neighboring towns when their health centers are unfortunately closed.

Every month, about 100 women give birth in this hospital, about 40 of whom present direct risks to their life or that of the baby. Newborns requiring specific care are then directly taken care of in the neonatal service of the structure.

In order to detect these complications for mothers and babies as early as possible, pre and post-natal consultations are provided throughout the network of health centers in the region.

MSF's commitment is therefore not limited to Port-à-Piment. MSF provides support to local health centers in terms of training, donations of medical equipment, referral of patients to appropriate structures, construction of waste management areas, and assistance in the event of a shortage in the supply of medical inputs. Community awareness also plays a crucial role in health promotion and disease prevention.

On this day of commemoration, MSF reiterates its commitment to the Haitian people and will continue to work tirelessly to support communities in difficulty.
