iciHaiti - Insecurity : Attack on General Hospital, Death Toll rises
Friday, December 27, Ulrika Richardson, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, condemned in the strongest terms the attack on the State University Hospital of Haiti, better known as the General Hospital, on December 24 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-43918-haiti-flash-bloody-inauguration-at-the-general-hospital-videos.html .

According to hospital sources, the latest provisional human toll is 4 deaths and 10 injured people, 4 of whom are in serious condition, all admitted to the La Paix Hospital.

This attack comes only 8 days after the one against the Bernard Mevs Hospital in Port-au-Prince which was vandalized and burned https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-43869-haiti-flash-gangs-set-fire-to-bernard-mevs-hospital-considerable-damage-video.html

"Attacks on health facilities are unacceptable [...] Medical facilities and personnel must never be a target. These serious incidents against health facilities further deprive the Haitian population, especially the most vulnerable in the Port- au-Prince metropolitan area where only 37 per cent of health facilities are fully functional, of vital healthcare services. All the parties involved must take care not to target health facilities or personnel, and guarantee access to healthcare for people in need," said Ms. Richardson.

Despite the worrying security situation and limited response capacities, humanitarian partners continue, alongside national partners, to support efforts to provide multi-sectoral assistance to millions of Haitians in need.

In 2025, half of Haiti's population, or 6 million people, will need humanitarian assistance, including 3.3 million children.
