iciHaiti - Montreal : A metro station named «Vertières» (video)
The Embassy of Haiti in Canada warmly welcomes the decision of the Société de transport de Montréal and the City of Montreal to name "Vertières", one of the five new stations on the extension of the Blue Line metro, in tribute to the decisive battle of November 18, 1803, which paved the way for Haitian independence and marked the universal history of the struggle for freedom.

The announcement was made in Montreal in the presence of several prominent figures from the Haitian community and Academician Dany Laferrière, who brought the name Vertières to the French-speaking world by having it entered the dictionary of the Académie française.

Located in the heart of the Saint-Michel district, home to a large Haitian community, this naming represents a powerful gesture of recognition and inclusion, highlighting the significant contribution of Haitians to the cultural, social, and economic vitality of Montreal.

Construction began in 2023 and is scheduled to be operational in 2031.

This initiative reflects a strong commitment to promoting the contributions of cultural communities to Montreal's fabric.
