Archaeological discovery in Haiti : Emergency mission

Erol Josué, Director General of the National Bureau of Ethnology (BNE), accompanied by the BNE technical team and archaeologist Joseph Sony Jean, is leading an emergency mission to Grande-Rivière-du-Nord following the discovery of a collection of ancient weapons on the grounds of the Conservative Baptist Church during excavations of a vanished fort.

The team was deployed to the site to verify the discovery, document the artifacts, and conduct initial scientific analyses. The BNE delegation also met with Jovenel Jean, the Mayor of the municipality, the Deputy Chief of Police of Grande-Rivière-du-Nord, and representatives from the church and the school to discuss the necessary measures for the protection and preservation of this historical heritage.

Scientific research and analysis are underway to determine the origin, dating, and historical significance of the collection, with the aim of better understanding and promoting Haiti's cultural heritage. The National Emergency Bureau (BNE) wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the Minister of the Interior, and particularly to the Secretary of State for Territorial Administration, who made the meeting with the authorities of Grande Rivière Nord possible. The BNE also extends its deepest thanks to the General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGPC) for facilitating the team's transportation to the North.
