iciHaïti - FLASH : Update on the flood toll

Since October 24, 2026, heavy rains have affected the South, Nippes, and Grand'Anse departments. Several watercourses have overflowed, causing flooding in numerous municipalities.

According to situation reports from the Departmental Risk and Disaster Management Committee (CDGRD) of Grand(Anse and the Departmental Directorates of Civil Protection (DDPC) for Nippes and South, as well as an October 26 report from the organization Entraide Médicale Internationale (EMI), three people have died in Nippes, one in the Sud-Est department, and two fishermen are reported missing in Les Abricots (Grand'Anse).

The Nippes department has sustained the heaviest impact, with 1,767 homes flooded, 48 small houses destroyed, and 1,920 families affected. In Grande Anse, 630 homes were flooded, along with the community hospital in Corail, a school, and a public market. In the Sud department, several hundred homes were flooded, including approximately 200 in Les Cayes—and sections of the embankments along the Ravine du South in Les Cayes have collapsed.

Agricultural losses and the loss of livestock have been reported in a region already affected by drought. Several unpaved roads have been damaged, hindering access to certain municipalities. Population displacement has also been reported; families have sought shelter with relatives in Grande Anse, in schools within the Sud and Nippes departments, and in a church in Baradères.

Departmental civil protection authorities have partially activated their Emergency Operations Centers (COU). They are monitoring the situation and conducting public awareness campaigns for the affected populations. At this stage, the information gathered remains preliminary; additional multi-sectoral data are expected as field assessments are consolidated.
