iciHaiti - Cholera : Slight upward trend in March
The cholera outbreak continues with a slight upward trend in March 2018 with 290 suspected cases and 1 death compared to the 249 suspected cases and 1 death recorded in February. The incidence rate for the period between January and March 2018 was 0.08%, a decrease compared to the same period in 2017 when the incidence rate was 0.37%. The epidemic continues to concentrate in its usual basin: the most affected departments remain Ouest, Centre and Artibonite with 137, 63 and 41 registered cases respectively. However, the recent increase in cases in Nord and Nord-Ouest highlights the fact that vulnerability to cholera remains significant throughout the national territory.

The rainy season from April to June and the beginning of the holiday season across the country, between June and September, are important risk factors that require maintaining the level of response activities. This includes coordination, case management, epidemiological surveillance and community rapid response. The widespread use of oral cholera vaccination to immediately reduce the burden of the disease in hotspots should also be added more systematically to these activities.

Situation in figures :

1st to 30th March 2018 :
290 new suspected cholera cases -78% compared with March 1st to 31st 2017
1 new death -87% in comparison with March 1 to 31, 2017

October 2010 to March 2018 :
819,000 cumulative cases
9,757 cumulative deaths

From 1st January to 31 March 2018 272,305 people were sensitized during rapid responses and prevention activities. 27,235 households received at least one home water chlorination product. 1,760 suspected cases responded to by response teams (including cases of acute diarrhea), 98% of suspected cholera cases responded to and 95% of response within 48 hours.
