iciHaiti - Agriculture : Food Security (UPDATE July)
According to the latest observations in Haiti of the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEW NET) drought in June disrupted the development of spring crops affecting maize and beans and causing crop losses. Other crops, including fruit trees, behave normally. Nevertheless, the sources of income of the poorest are stable because of their diversity: agricultural work in the Dominican Republic, diaspora transfers, coal production, soil preparation for the summer / autumn campaign, etc...

FEW NET emphasizes that markets are well stocked with local but mostly imported products. The price of local corn fell by 4% between May and June and that of beans remained stable but high. The price of rice continues to be above its five-year average. Particular interest is focused on its evolution, given the importance of rice in the diet of the poorest.

Demonstrations took place earlier this month to protest against the rising of fuel prices. The calm returned after a few days. However, the rising of fuel prices are part of a package of structural measures and new announcements could cause further disruption.

Most livelihood zones will therefore remain in Stress (Phase 2 of the CPI) and some in Minimal (Phase 1 of the CPI).
