iciHaiti - Politic : POHDH concerned about insecurity and corruption

In a note, the Platform of Haitian Organizations of Human Rights (POHDH) wishes to express its concerns about the "proliferation of armed gangs and the multiplication of acts of crime in several places of the country".

POHDH believes that this reality of violence and crime in the neighborhoods is above all "linked to the manipulation of the misery of the population by political and economic groups," and calls for an end to these practices that lead to enormous human rights violations.

Moreover, the POHDH denounces "the contempt of the Executive face this situation of generalized insecurity" underlining that this attitude "trivializes the sacred right to life instead of tracking the bandits and take the necessary steps to avoid amalgamation between armed gangs and established authorities," a situation that the platform describes as "unacceptable and revolting."

Moreover, it deplores the fact that corruption, which is a feature of the political and economic system in place, further reinforces social inequalities and hinders any progress on human rights.

Finally, the POHDH believes that "the insecurity and corruption have as background the impunity that for some time has become a system in the country."

"[...] It is therefore clear that the human rights situation in Haiti remains worrying" and the POHDH "invites the authorities to reconcile themselves and make the realization of human rights their priority."
