On Tuesday, January 1, the US Coast Guard announced that an 18-foot boat with 11 people on board capsized Sunday night off the south coast of Florida. The boat came from Freeport in the Bahamas to Miami as part of a smuggling of migrants.

A boat that sailed in the area recovered 9 survivors of Haitian origin, but two are still missing (the alleged smuggler of migrant and a Haitian child aged 9).

Research was undertaken in an area 46 miles east of Jupiter Inlet.
