iciHaiti - Politic : The Government calls for respect for democratic principles
December 10 marks the celebration of the 71st anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which in its article 3 states that : "Everyone has the right to liberty and security of person." In view of the current situation, the Secretary of State for Communication Eddy Jackson Alexis on behalf of the Government, takes the opportunity to salute the efforts made by the police to "allow the people to go about freely in his activities [...] while respecting the right of everyone to assert their claims in the strict application of the law."

In this circumstance, the Administration Jovenel-Lapin, takes the opportunity to recall that the democratic regimes rest, among others, on 5 fundamental principles :

  • Respect and the guarantee of individual freedoms;
  • The obligation of the authorities to ensure public order;
  • The autonomy of the three powers of the state (executive, legislative, judicial);
  • Institutional strengthening;
  • The equitable distribution of justice.

Affirming that "the administration of the Republic is respectful of these principles and these democratic values" atating that "The strict application of the law, in the established norms, does not allow its use or exploitation for political purposes and the guarantee of public order is a state duty."

The Jovenel-Lapin Administration says it can not endorse "any strategy of repression" and reminds citizens of any allegiance "the imperative obligation in these times of crisis to sit down to discuss in order to reach a pact sustainable in the national interest. Adding that the Jovenel-Lapin Administration "has no intention of interfering in court cases; nevertheless, according to the constitutional prescriptions, it gives itself the ways and the means to carry out the fight against corruption, the clichés of a decadent system, the banditism and the social violence."
