On Wednesday evening, Pierre Jacques Matilus, 56, former Consul General of Haiti in Santiago, Dominican Republic, was shot dead by several bullets near his business as he tried to flee after opposing strong resistance to 4 armed individuals, who tried to kidnap him in Delmas 40 B, wounding one of his attackers with a knife.

Reacting to this tragedy, the Consulate General of Haiti in Santiago declared, "The assassination of the former Consul General of Haiti in Santiago (Dominican Republic) Jacques Pierre Matilus has left us in the greatest dismay. His death is a huge loss for Haitian diplomacy, for his family, friends and former colleagues here at the consulate. We wish them courage and send them our sincere condolences while wishing that light and justice be shed on this despicable act."
