iciHaiti - Security : Escape of prisoners at Petit-Goâve Prison

On the night from Wednesday to Thursday, September 2, 2021, 50 prisoners from the city of Les Cayes locked in a cell in the unfinished building of the new Petit-Goâve Prison attempted to escape.

39 were restrained 11 others managed to escape. Four of them were killed by the police and two others were taken back. The police are looking for the other 5 who are on the run.

According to the Police Commissioner of Petit-Goâve, Jean Claude Bazile, "the building of the new Prison is unfinished, the prisoners of Les Cayes have removed the gates of their cells. We did everything to control the situation," adding "the prisoners in Les Cayes are very violent [...] They are the ones who prepared the action."

This prison, placed under the command of Inspector Zétrenne Eustache, housed 448 inmates, including 213 from Petit-Goâve; 185 from the city of Anse-à-Veau and 50 from the city of Les Cayes.

It should be noted that no particular security and service device had been put in place to receive all these detainees.
