iciHaiti - Health : Unicef warns against a return of cholera in Haiti if...

Haiti could face a cholera epidemic after the recent earthquake of August 14, 2021, as already happened after the 2010 earthquake, if sanitation and water hygiene are neglected, warned the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

"Water hygiene and sanitation are a problem in Haiti [...] UNICEF is fighting the cholera that broke out here in 2010, in collaboration with the Haitian Ministry of Health, and it is very likely that we will win this battle because there has been no case of cholera since February 2019. Now, if we neglect water hygiene and sanitation, water-borne diseases, such as cholera, can reappear and it will be one more problem to be solved," said Ndiaga Seck Head of Communication for UNICEF Haiti.

Remember that following the earthquake of August 14 which devastated the southern part of Haiti, some 1,800 damaged sanitation systems were identified.
