The Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME), through a press note bearing the signature of its Director General, Claude Preptit, brings to the attention of the population that the premises of the Haitian Medical Association (AMH ) located at number 29 of the first avenue du Travail in Bois Verna recorded on Monday May 23, 2022, around 12:30 p.m., an explosion of ceramics in the room where a press conference was held. The assistance quickly linked this event to an earthquake, which caused a general panic.

The BME would like to inform the public that no earthquakes were observed and felt that day in the area between noon and 1:00 a.m.

A bursting of ceramics in a building is a fairly common phenomenon in Haiti. This can be explained from the conditions under which the laying of the ceramics was carried out as well as the quality of the ceramics used.

The BME urges the population not to automatically attribute a seismic origin to any ground movement and recommends that the AMH clearly identify the causes of the bursts before proceeding with the repair of the affected areas.
