Spotted by a US Coast Guard helicopter, a heavily overcrowded 40-foot cabin cruiser was rescued about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Boca Raton, Florida.

On board, 98 Haitian migrants (53 men, 35 women and 10 children), a Ugandan and a Bahamian, told Coast Guard crew members that they had been at sea for a week and had lacked food and water for the past two days. No injuries were reported, only cases of dehydration…

"The smugglers don't care about the lives of migrants," said Captain Robert Kinsey of Coast Guard District 7, citing the lack of food, life jacket water and the dangerous overloading of the boat adding, "These people are lucky to still be alive."

The migrants were handed over to Bahamian authorities last Sunday.
