iciHaiti - Agriculture : The importance of consuming deep-sea fish

To raise public awareness about the importance of consuming deep-sea fish and protecting endangered marine species, the Ministry of Agriculture, through its South Departmental Agricultural Directorate (DDA), organized a large fair in the town of Les Cayes, at the Directorate's headquarters.

Among the products on display at the Ministry's stand were dishes made with deep-sea fish such as tuna, sea bream, and blue marlin, commonly known in rural areas as "balawou."

Visitors were pleasantly surprised to discover and taste a variety of fish dishes with local flavors, including fish gratin, fish chicken, fish tassot, chiktay, and more.

In addition to fish, fishing associations, working with the DDA, exhibited equipment necessary for deep-sea fishing, including GPS-equipped boats, life jackets, and fish aggregating devices used to catch large fish on the high seas.

The main aim of this fair was to promote the productivity of fishing and fishermen, as promoted by the Ministry through the Program to Support Agriculture and Fisheries Productivity and Improve Rural Infrastructure (PAPAIR), and to improve market access.
