iciHaiti - Social : Today, literacy is more than knowing how to read and write
On Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Karibe Convention Center, Haiti celebrated the 59th International Literacy Day, with the aim of highlighting Haiti's commitment to eradicating illiteracy as part of the fight against poverty and human development.

In the presence of State authorities, including members of the Presidential Transitional Council, the Minister of National Education, and the Secretary of State for Literacy and Education, Eric Voli Bi, UNESCO Resident Representative in Haiti, recalled, during his speech, the "devastating impact" of the security crisis and ongoing political instability on education and literacy.

Recalling the words of Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, Eric Voli Bi emphasized the need to develop the ability to "think critically and distinguish facts from opinions," explaining that literacy now encompasses the ability to navigate, understand, evaluate, and produce information in complex digital environments.

The ceremony, organized with the support of the Ministry of Education, the National Education Fund (FNE), and UNESCO, also marked the launch of the functional literacy project targeting 1.5 million people, planned for the period from October 2025 to September 2026.
